Berg Steel vs. Aluminum Grain Trailers — Super B, Tridem & Tandem: Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we get at K&K Trailer Sales is whether to go steel or aluminum on a new Berg grain trailer — whether that's a Super B, a tridem (also called a triaxle), or a tandem. The honest answer is that it depends on how and where you run. Both are excellent trailers — Berg builds them right — but they suit different operations. Here is a practical breakdown based on nearly 30 years of selling and running these trailers in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Super B, Tridem/Triaxle, and Tandem — What's the Difference?

Before getting into steel versus aluminum, it helps to understand the three configurations and what each one is designed for. The right configuration affects your legal payload, your truck requirements, and how you operate day to day.

Tridem and triaxle refer to the same trailer — a grain trailer with three axles. You will see both terms used interchangeably across Alberta and Saskatchewan. Berg uses the tridem designation. Some people also spell it "triaxial" — all the same thing.

Payload Comparison — Steel vs. Aluminum, All Configurations

These numbers are based on Berg grain trailers paired with an 8,000 kg tandem truck. They show the real-world difference in legal payload between steel and aluminum across all three trailer configurations.

Berg Steel Grain Trailers

 TandemTridem / TriaxleSuper B
Max Legal GVW40,000 kg47,000 kg63,500 kg
Empty Weight (truck + trailer)12,700 kg14,400 kg18,000 kg
Legal Payload27,300 kg32,600 kg45,500 kg
Approx. Bushels (wheat)~1,000 bu~1,200 bu~1,660 bu

Berg Aluminum Grain Trailers

Max Legal GVW40,000 kg47,000 kg63,500 kg
Empty Weight (truck + trailer)12,270 kg13,000 kg17,800 kg
Legal Payload27,730 kg34,000 kg45,700 kg
Approx. Bushels (wheat)~1,020 bu~1,250 bu~1,677 bu

On the Super B, aluminum gives you roughly 200 kg more legal payload per load than steel — about 17 extra bushels. On the tridem/triaxle, the aluminum advantage is more significant at 1,400 kg more payload — approximately 50 extra bushels per load. That payload difference adds up over a full harvest season.

Weight — It's Closer Than You Think on Super B

Most people assume aluminum is dramatically lighter than steel. On Berg Super B grain trailers specifically, the numbers are closer than expected:

Berg Super B TrailerTrailer Weight
GT Steel Super B (Standard)10,000 kg
Aurora Aluminum Super B9,800 kg
GT Steel Super B (Lightweight Package)9,600 kg

The aluminum Super B falls between the standard steel and the lightweight steel option. Berg's Lightweight Package steel Super B at 9,600 kg is actually 200 kg lighter than the aluminum — a fact that surprises most buyers. The payload tables above use standard steel weights; if you spec the Lightweight Package, your steel payload numbers improve further.

Fuel Economy — The Biggest Real-World Difference

This is where aluminum pulls ahead for high-mileage operators across all configurations. Berg's aluminum Aurora line uses a closed-end aerodynamic design, compared to the open-end design of the steel GT line. In real-world highway hauling, most operators report up to 1 mile per gallon better fuel economy with aluminum over steel.

At current diesel prices, running high annual kilometres, that saving adds up to thousands of dollars per year — often enough to offset a significant portion of the price difference between steel and aluminum over the life of the trailer. Custom haulers and long-haul grain farmers consistently find this to be the most compelling reason to choose aluminum.

Rust Protection — Standard on All Berg Trailers

A common misconception is that rust protection is an upgrade exclusive to certain Berg models. In reality, Berg's multi-layer rust protection system is standard on every Berg steel grain trailer — Super B, tridem/triaxle, and tandem. Every Berg GT steel trailer comes standard with:

  • Full sandblasting before any coating is applied
  • Zinc epoxy primer as the foundation layer
  • Urethane topcoat
  • Heavy-duty rock guard coating on the hoppers
  • Internal rust-proofing to prevent inside-out corrosion

The Platinum Series refers to a collection of premium options — not a separate rust protection tier. Those options include additional interior zinc coating, disc brakes, lift axles, electric tarps, and custom colours, and every one can be ordered individually. Berg trailers are highly customizable across all configurations — you pick and choose options when you order rather than buying predetermined packages.

Durability — Steel Has the Edge in Tough Applications

For frac sand hauling, oilfield work, grain carting, seed tending, or operating regularly on gravel fields and rough terrain, steel is the better choice across all configurations. Berg's GT steel trailers are built for these demanding applications. Because of Berg's standard rust protection system, the traditional durability gap between steel and aluminum has narrowed considerably — Berg steel trailers outlast older-generation steel trailers by a significant margin.

Corrosion — Aluminum Still Needs Maintenance

Aluminum does not rust, but it does corrode. Road calcium — applied heavily on Alberta and Saskatchewan highways through winter — can eat into aluminum if the trailer is not washed regularly. A rock chip on aluminum leaves bare metal exposed, and while it will not spread the way rust does, calcium buildup causes pitting over time.

Berg's Aurora aluminum trailers use stainless steel rivets that will not corrode or stain the sidewalls, and a closed cavity design around the fifth wheel plate that eliminates hard-to-clean interior spaces. The smooth aluminum sidewalls also wash cleaner and faster than the ribbed sidewalls of a steel trailer.

Resale Value

Aluminum trailers consistently command higher resale values on the used market — whether Super B, tridem/triaxle, or tandem. Buyers can assess aluminum condition at a glance with no rust hiding under fresh paint. A well-maintained Berg Aurora aluminum grain trailer holds its value better over 10 to 15 years than a comparable steel trailer.

Quick Reference — Which Should You Choose?

Choose Berg Steel GT (Super B, Tridem/Triaxle, or Tandem) if you:

  • Run frac sand, oilfield, or other tough off-road applications
  • Operate on rough terrain, gravel fields, or grain carting and seed tending duty
  • Want the lightest possible Super B (Lightweight Package at 9,600 kg)
  • Run shorter haul distances where fuel savings are less significant
  • Are prioritizing upfront purchase cost

Choose Berg Aurora Aluminum (Super B, Tridem/Triaxle, or Tandem) if you:

  • Are a custom hauler or running high annual highway kilometres
  • Want to maximize legal payload — especially on tridem/triaxle configuration
  • Want long-term fuel economy savings from the closed-end aerodynamic design
  • Have dealt with rusty trailers in the past and want to avoid the maintenance
  • Are focused on long-term resale value
