Berg Trailers — Overview & Why Choose Berg
Berg Trailers are grain trailers built in Winkler, Manitoba specifically for Canadian prairie conditions. K&K Trailer Sales has been an authorized Berg dealer since approximately 2012, when we first started selling Berg grain boxes, and we carry the full grain trailer line — steel Super B, aluminum Super B, tridem (triaxle), and tandem configurations. This page covers who Berg is, what they build, and why we chose to carry their trailers over other options available to us.
Who Is Berg Trailers?
Berg Trailers started as Berg's Prep and Paint, founded in 1991 by Peter Bergen in Winkler, Manitoba. The business began with industrial and autobody painting, then expanded into sandblasting and painting grain trailers. Over time, Berg's became one of the go-to shops for repairing cracking and rust issues on all makes and models of grain trailers — both closed-end and open-end designs.
That repair background is directly relevant to why Berg trailers are built the way they are. Peter Bergen spent years fixing the same problems on other manufacturers' trailers before designing his own. The first Berg grain trailers were manufactured in 2014. By 2018, Berg had reached 100 trailers per year — a milestone that coincided with significant refinements to their build quality and finishing process.
"We strive for excellence. We provide a product that is made right for you. When you decide to do business with Berg's, it is our goal to go the extra mile for you." — Peter Bergen, Owner, Berg Trailers
Berg Trailers is a privately owned Western Canadian manufacturer. They are not a large corporation with hundreds of dealers — they are a focused manufacturer with a trusted dealer network, building grain trailers specifically for the Canadian agricultural and commercial hauling market.
The Berg Trailer Line
Berg manufactures grain trailers in two main lines — the GT Steel line and the Aurora Aluminum line — across three configurations: Super B, tridem (triaxle), and tandem. All Berg grain trailers are available in both steel and aluminum.
| Line | Material | Configurations Available |
|---|---|---|
| Berg GT | Steel | Super B, Tridem/Triaxle, Tandem |
| Berg Aurora | Aluminum | Super B, Tridem/Triaxle, Tandem |
Berg also manufactures grain pup trailers, grain box and silage box trailers, end dump trailers, and tag trailers. K&K Trailer Sales carries the grain trailer lines. For other Berg products, contact us directly.
Why Berg Builds Trailers the Way They Do
Berg's origin as a repair shop shapes how they engineer their trailers. They spent years seeing where other trailers failed — rust starting from inside cavities, paint failing at rock chip points, rivets corroding and leaking, and structural cracking at high-stress points. The Berg build process is a direct response to those failure modes.
Rust Protection — Standard on Every Steel Trailer
Every Berg GT steel grain trailer comes standard with a multi-layer rust protection system — this is not an optional package:
- Full sandblasting before any coating is applied
- Zinc epoxy primer as the foundation layer
- Urethane topcoat
Rock guard coating on the hoppers and internal rust-proofing are available options — not standard — but most buyers opt for both when given the choice, and we spec them on the majority of trailers we order. The internal rust-proofing in particular addresses inside-out corrosion, the type that destroys trailers from the inside before it is ever visible on the outside. Additional zinc coating on the interior is also available as an upgrade. The Platinum Series designation refers to a collection of available premium options — not a separate protection tier. All Berg steel trailers start with the same sandblast, zinc primer, and urethane topcoat foundation.
Aluminum Construction — Aurora Line
Berg's Aurora aluminum trailers use stainless steel rivets on the exterior — where the highest stress and corrosion exposure occurs — rather than standard rivets that corrode and stain the sidewalls over time. The closed-end aerodynamic design delivers better fuel economy than open-end steel trailers, with most operators seeing up to 1 mile per gallon improvement on highway hauls. The cavity around the fifth wheel plate is fully enclosed, eliminating a hard-to-clean area that collects road grime and calcium on other trailer designs.
Customization
Berg trailers are built to order and are highly customizable. Unlike some manufacturers who sell predetermined packages, Berg allows customers to select options individually — colour, sidewall height, axle configuration, tarp system, brake type, lift axles, interior zinc coating, and more. If you have specific requirements for your operation, you can spec a trailer to match rather than accepting a fixed package.
Berg's Early Years
Berg started manufacturing steel grain trailers in 2014. Like any manufacturer building a new product, there was a refinement process in the early years — some consistency issues and occasional cracking on steel Super Bs that needed to be monitored and addressed. These were not widespread failures, and many early Berg trailers are still running well today. Berg's paint system was strong from day one, which makes sense given their prep and paint origins.
By around 2017, steel tridem trailers were well dialed in. The steel Super B continued to be refined through to approximately 2018–2019 as Berg worked out the best approaches for the most demanding applications, particularly frac sand hauling. Berg did not start building aluminum Super Bs until approximately 2019 — by which point the steel side was well matured — and aluminum Super Bs have been solid since launch.
The Berg trailers being built today are the product of over a decade of continuous improvement and real-world feedback. We have watched the product develop firsthand and are confident in what we sell.
Berg Trailer Warranty
Berg's warranty is more comprehensive than a simple pro-rated schedule — different components carry different coverage terms. Here is a full breakdown:
| Component | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Trailer Structure Main frame, beam, hoppers, sidewalls, bracing, support bars, welding | 5 years — 100% parts and labour |
| All Components (general) | 90 days — 100% parts and labour from in-service date |
| Finish & Undercoating PPG paint products — corrosion creep coverage (not rock chips) | 5 years pro-rated: coverage applies to corrosion creeping beyond 1" after year 1, 2" after year 2, and so on |
| Suspension & Axles Ridewell axle and suspension parts | 3 years parts (on and off highway); 1 year labour (off highway); 1 year on/off highway use |
| 5th Wheel & Landing Gear | 5 years — as per manufacturer warranty |
| Accessories Ladders, steps, aluminum fenders, mud flap brackets | 5 years pro-rated: Year 1 — 100% parts & labour; Year 2 — 100% parts; Year 3 — 75% parts; Year 4 — 50% parts; Year 5 — 25% parts |
| Wiring Harness Sealco harness | 10 years — parts only |
| LED Lights Trucklite LED lights | 3 years |
| Tarps, Augers & Chute Openers Michel's Select and Maximizer tarps, augers | 1 year — 100% parts and labour |
| Tires | As per manufacturer warranty |
| Wheel Alignment | 30 days from in-service date |
A few things worth noting: the structural warranty — frame, hoppers, sidewalls, and welds — is a full 5 years at 100% parts and labour, not a pro-rated schedule. That is the strongest part of the coverage and the area that matters most on a grain trailer. The Sealco wiring harness carries a 10-year parts warranty, which is exceptional. Warranty does not cover wearable items, rock chips, or accidental damage.
K&K Trailer Sales is an authorized Berg warranty facility at both our Rimbey, AB and Delisle, SK locations. Warranty work is handled locally — you are not shipping a trailer back to Winkler, Manitoba.
Why K&K Carries Berg — And Why That Matters to You
We have been in this industry since 1996. We have seen a lot of trailers come and go, and we have watched what happens to customers who buy trailers that don't hold up. We chose Berg because we believe in the product — and we back that up by running Berg trailers ourselves in our own rental fleet, including in frac sand applications where trailers take a serious beating. If we didn't trust the trailer, we wouldn't run it ourselves.
As a smaller family-owned dealer, we also offer something that larger operations often can't: when you call K&K, you talk to someone who knows the product, knows the industry, and can make a decision. We have grown up in the farming community in Alberta and Saskatchewan. We understand grain hauling, frac sand operations, and the economics of running trailers for a living. When you have a question or a problem, you are not working through a customer service chain — you are talking directly to people who know the answer.
We know our customers by name. If you have bought from us before and you walk in the door, we know who you are and we know your operation. That is not something a large dealer network can offer, and it is something we take seriously.
